What is minimally required in order for human rights to be justified? This is the core issue adressed in this study. Cosmopolitans claim that social and economic rights, the so-called positive rights, should also belong to the list of human rights. This book argues that appeals to the contract will not serve as an adequate justification of global positive rights, due to the strong asymmetry between the rich and poor. Instead, such rights should be justified by appeal to facts of need. It is the vital interest of people in need that provide the reason why global positive rights are justified. Thus, moral realism offers the most adequate account of global positive rights.
